The following is a news release from the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission: ASMFC Summer Flounder, Scup and Black Sea Bass Board Approves Draft Addendum XXII for Public Comment Addendum Considers 2012 Black Sea Bass Recreational Measures Arlington, VA - The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission's Summer Flounder, Scup, and Black Sea Bass Management Board (Board) has approved Draft Addendum XXII for public comment. The Draft Addendum proposes a program wherein the Board divides the recreational black sea bass coastwide allocations into state-by-state management for 2012 only. The management plan for black sea bass does not provide an opportunity to craft recreational measures by regions or state, it only allows for a coastwide measure. Due to the wide geographic range of this species, the application of coastwide minimum size, possession limit, and season restrictions may not affect every area involved in the fishery the same way. States were concerned that the coastwide regulations disproportionately impacted states within the management unit; therefore, they approved Addendum XXI which allowed for state-by-state measures in 2011 for state waters only. Because Addendum XXI expired at the end of 2011 and the Board continues to have the same concerns for the 2012 fishing season, the Board initiated Draft Addendum XXII. The Draft Addendum is intended to provide the necessary management flexibility to mitigate potential disproportionate impacts on states that can result from coastwide measures for 2012.
Only one state (New York) has scheduled a public hearing on the Draft Addendum, which will be held as part of New York's Marine Resources Advisory Council Meeting, scheduled for January 17, 2012 at 7:00PM at New York State Department of Environmental Protection's Marine Bureau Headquarters, 205 N. Belle Mead Road, East Setauket, New York. Any additional hearings will be posted to the Commission's website at http://www.asmfc.org/meetings.htm. Fishermen and other interested groups are encouraged to provide input on the Draft Addendum, either by attending public hearings or providing written comments. The Draft Addendum can be obtained at http://www.asmfc.org/speciesDocuments/sfScupBSB/bsb/fmps/bsb_DraftAddendumXXII_PublicComment.pdf or by contacting the Commission at 703. 842.0740. Public comment will be accepted until 5:00 PM (EST) on February 5, 2012 and should be forwarded to Toni Kerns, FMP Coordinator, 1050 N. Garden State Outdoors Show To Run January 12 through January 15
The 29th Annual Garden State Outdoor Sportsmen's & Adventure Show (GSOSS) will be held next weekend, January 12-15, 2012, at the New Jersey Convention and Exposition Center in Raritan, NJ. The 2012 show promises to be the largest and most exciting event yet and attendance is anticipated to be well over 17,000.
Be sure to stop by the Recreational Fishing Alliance (RFA) booth #1038 for your chance to enter a special members only drawing with prize package to be given away to one lucky angler who signs up or renews his or her membership at the show (new RFA t-shirt, RFA hat, limited edition copy of John Geiser's Guide to Saltwater Fishing, ARC 16" de-hooker and more!) You don't have to be present to win the anglers prize package, but you do have to stop by the RFA booth #1038 to enter!
GSOSS organizers are offering twice as many hunting and fishing seminars as ever before, which this year boasts two Saturday seminars by the RFA's Jim Hutchinson starting at 10:30 a.m. next Saturday (spotlight on weakfish) and capping the day at 5 p.m. (striped bass). From saltwater fishing to hunting and freshwater action, the Garden State Outdoor Sportsmen's & Adventure Show is a great way to shake the cold funk this month before it even gets a chance to settle in.
Be sure to stop by the RFA booth #1038 to get an update on what RFA's working on right now in helping to safeguard our right to fish, and be sure to stop in for the local saltwater seminars with the RFA on Saturday. Show hours are 1 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, January 12th, and Friday the 13th: from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, January 14th; and on Sunday, January 15th from 9 to 5.

RFA Blasts "Beltway Insiders" For Promoting Toothless Fisheries Bill
Tackle and boating industry professionals around the country are being led to believe that a new bill in the House and Senate called the Fishery Science Improvement Act of 2011 (HR2309/S1916) would actually improve science and help keep anglers on the water in 2012. However, Atlantic coastal fishermen specifically who've read the legislation agree the bills promoted by the national sporting media and their industry lobbyists do nothing to actually fix the science, nor will they truly keep important recreational fisheries open to coastal anglers. "It doesn't do anything to improve the science," said Capt. Mark Brown of South Carolina. "It seems to lack any real direction and is very confusing to people who think there's some type of scientific requirement written in." "These are very short bills to read, but they don't appear to have enough information in there to make a difference in terms of the actual assessments that have been compiled by NOAA," Brown added.

New World Record Striped Bass Approved by IGFA |

From the IGFA ..
Twenty-Nine year reign ends with approval of New Stiped Bass Record Greg Myerson’s 37.1 kg (81 lb 14 oz) striped bass record was approved on Wednesday, October 19, after the IGFA’s Record Committee came to a consensus on the catch and its supporting documentation. Myerson’s catch created a whirlwind of excitement in early August for striper anglers everywhere, but especially in the northeastern USA.
"After a 15 minute fight on my St. Croix rod and Quantum reel, I got the striped bass close enough to the boat for netting,” Myerson shared in the testimony accompanying his world record application. “The fish was bigger than I thought. I slipped on eel slime and banged my ribs against the gunwhale of the boat. But it didn’t matter. The monster fish was mine. At this point it was about 8 pm, I put the fish into the hold and fished the rest of the tide. As I fished, I repeatedly peered into the hold and asked myself ‘is this striper really that big?’ The following morning, I brought the striped bass to Jack’s Shoreline Bait and Tackle to be weighed. The fish measured 54 inches in length and tipped Jack’s digital scale at 81.88 pounds. It really was that big."
The IGFA’s approval of Myerson’s catch marks the end of Albert McReynolds’ 29-year reign as All-Tackle record holder for this prestigious saltwater species. In addition to now holding the All-Tackle record, Myerson’s catch also landed him the new men’s 37 kg (80 lb) line class record, which previously stood at 70 lb. Congratulations to Greg Myerson on this historical record catch – and good luck to you striper fishermen aiming to best it in the future!
